I used artists oils for a wash and various stains/streaks. I am overall very happy with this build. Other than the decals it was a great kits. The cockpit has good details, the recessed details is great and really took the wash well. Using oil paints for all the streaks and stains was a first for me, and I think I will continue to use this method.

Jan 02, 2010 14:46 Stupid Decals
Next time I build an Academy kit I will acquire aftermarket decals, period... These are the worst decals I have ever worked with. I have put them all on the Saber but am still working on two of the yellow wing stripes! Trying to get them to sit down nice and not curl up on the edges is a pain in the ass.... Worse is that the large yellow stripes just don't conform nicely to the recessed detail and so if I were to do a wash to accentuate the panel lines I don't think it will show where the yellow stripes are.

Dec 30, 2009 19:54 Decal Update
So I finally started applying the decals again. After discovering how crappy these are back in Sept I put the project aside. Today I finally started up again.

These are really thick decals. Glenn put me onto Solve-a-Set and this works well. I imagine for any "normal" thickness carrier film the decals would all but disapere. On these one it makes them look OK. On the larger decals they still don't hug the recessed detail well, but it will do.

I completed the one side and here is a quick snap of it.

Dec 20, 2009 18:23 Decals
I am going to try and complete the decals on this bitch. It was really disapointing to find how bad the decals are. Way to thick. Thanks to Glenn's advice I picked up solv-a-set and will give that a try. Maybe complete by the new year.

Sep 27, 2009 19:22 And survey says
I have looked at several reviews online for the Academy Saber and they all mention the heavy carrier film. I think I will just continue with them as is. I can always build another Saber!

Sep 27, 2009 11:46 Nice Decals, But
The decals a nicely printed. They are crisp, in register and will add color to a silver canvas. Unfortunately the decals are very think and do not hug the beautiful recessed details of this model.

Anyone ever removed decals from a kit before. Any suggestion that I can try that won't ruin the finish? I am going to need to pickup a new set because I can not finish this kit with these decals. Very frustrating!

Sep 08, 2009 23:54 Cockpit, Pilot and Canopy's oh my!
I did a bit more work on the cockpit. Still need to do the colors for control switches/indicator lights. Need a good reference for this.

Painted the pilot, touched up landing gear and wheels/bays. Gave the speed brake bay another wash.

Masked and painted the Canopy and attached the inner frame. Painted the light clear red.

Sep 04, 2009 22:14 Painting the Body
With the cockpit, airbrake and wheelwells masked off I airbrushed the body flat aluminum. Several sanding marks showed through so I broke out the superfine sanding pad and worked on them for a bit. I then resprayed those areas. I mixed up a batch of darker metallic and did a bit of post shading. When done with that I over sprayed a lighters coat of Aluminum again.

I also touched up the cockpit area and painted the tires black.

Sep 02, 2009 22:09 Cockpit Painting
Over the past few days I have painted the various panels black, given it an oil wash of Burn Umber and drybrushed the instrumets white. I still need to go through and pick out the color knobs and indicators/instruments.

Today I painted the Wheel Wells and Air brake well green and also gave a quick Raw Umber oil wash.

I sprayed and started to paint the Cockpit today. I should have done this before assembly but oh well... to late now.
