Jan 03, 2010 18:44 New Shelf
Decided I need another shelf in the hobby room. Fortunately I had another board already painted. In the process of packing the Christmas decorations away in the closet I moved some models to the empty spot and have room for a few more from the closet as well.
The shelf is high enough that I won't bump my head. Need to paint the edge black.

Aug 17, 2009 21:27 More Unpacking
The latest progress.
All the boxes of hobby room gear is unpacked. The paints are in the paint rack. The tools are kind of stashed. I think I need another solution to store them. I put up my TV ( as small 19 inch LCD), had to move a bracket to fit that one.
Moved some more model boxes from the closet to the shelves and got my work in progress models out.

Aug 17, 2009 06:44 Unpacking
Finished the majority of work lastnight. Just have a few more trim pieces to attach to shelve faces.
Unpacked all but 4 or 5 boxes. Those boxes contain my Warhammer and Gundam Models. No place to put them yet.

Aug 15, 2009 21:12 Shelving
The goal today was to get some shelves up. I decided to get pre cut shelving, "K3" board. It is while with a melamine/laminate coating. To keep with the theme of the rest of the room I painted it black. Only the lowest shelf has both sides painted. The higher shelf has only the bottom painted. I also painted the brackets black. I should have done two coats on the brackets as the paint scratches of easily. Oh well.
While things were drying I also started attaching the trim All the lower edges that are MDF will have it attached.
Tomorrow's projects will be to get the spray completed, one more shelf up over the spray booth and attach more trim. Also on the to do list is a solution to store paint jars

Aug 14, 2009 22:01 Desk and Base Cabinets installed
The lower portion of the hobby room is 90% done! The desk is supported by 2x2 braces between the cabinets. This will cut down on the flex of the 3/4 inch MDF.
I have decided, for now, to just go with shelving. To help it blend in I will paint the brackets black. The shelving will be 12 inches deep.
Still to figure out is
- Paint bottle storage
- Air Compressor placement
- tool storage

Aug 14, 2009 12:00 Change of Plans
I decided to build a new 9 inch wide base unit. Due to the placement of electrical outlets and the need for a bit more support at the far end of the work bench I am going to put the 18 inch base unit at the far end and the new 9 inch unit in the middle. This will free up the electrical outlet in the middle of the wall
The 9 inch base unit is built and has the first coat of paint on it. While it drys I will look at attaching the paint booth and desk at the end of the hobby room. Hopefully tonight all the base units are in and the desks are attached.

Aug 13, 2009 20:11 First units installed!
After waffling about matte or gloss I finally settle on a gloss finish. The units just did not look right with a flat finish. The base units have three coats. The desk tops will have 4 (currently have 3 and are drying over night.
Yesterday got the shelves in the small base unit and built the shroud for the spray booth. I got the first coat of paint on the small and large base units as well as the spray booth. At that point the rain started so I packed it in for the evening.
This afternoon I put the 2nd coat of paint on this morning and then this afternoon the 3rd coat. I sanded between each coat. I wired up and installed the hood fan into the shroud.
Once the base units were dry I brought them in and moved them around until I was happy with them. After this I measured and cut the two desktop pieces. I test fitted them then removed, sanded and put the first coat on (used up the last can of matte for this first coat). Got two more coats on and that was it for today.

Aug 12, 2009 09:25 Building the cabinets/desk/shelves
The first base cabinet unit is built. The smaller one (18x30x15) is basically finished. I just need to decide on the number/height of shelves to put in it. The basic frame of the corner base cabinet is also built. I am building this out of 1/2 inch MDF (3/4 inch for the desk tops), gluing and screwing it together.
I have also done the major cuts of the rest of the pieces needed. It took one sheet to build the small and corner cabinets. The other three sheets are cut it either 12 or 24 inch lengths. These will then be further cut to the size/shape required.
My original plan for the upper shelving/cabinet was to just attach the 12inch wide pieces using L brackets. I am thinking now of actually building cabinets. It will probably take another sheet of MDF to do that, so we shall see.
Today the plan is to finish the two base cabinets and build the spray booth cabinet. Will also cut and sand the desk tops. Lastly will put the first coat of paint on everything. That is probably be all I will get done today.
Tomorrow, if everything does well will install the base cabinets and desk tops. I am using 2X2 supports for under the desk top.

Aug 09, 2009 23:26 Updated Design
After thinking about what I need for storage and work space I reworked the design. Using the Ikea designer had issues so I broke out the graph paper and ruler. I came up with a design that I think works better. I can do it for about 200 bucks if I keep to open shelving. If I decide to add some draws/doors to any of the storage it will be a bit more.
The down side it is will take me a couple days to build and paint it. Will also need an extra pair of hands to help with the initial cuts as maneuvering the 4X8 sheets of MDF on the table saw can be challenging.
This may well change as I start to build things.

Aug 07, 2009 07:10 Preperation for work to begin
After Getting the trim in the basement finished and shelves build in the closet I started to unpack the hobby room boxes. These boxes have been packed for two years. It was therapeutic to actually begin.
I have more books than I remember, more models than I remember, models I don't ever remember buying.
Anyways here are some shots of the aftermath of unpacking.
